REACH, a ground-breaking EU Regulation The status of REACH today: The first reading in the European Parliament took place on November 17, 2005. Following its political agreement on December 13, 2005, the Commission Communication stating the Commission’s opinion on the Common Position of council and parliament was adopted on July 12, 2006 (Inter-institutional File: 2003/0256 (COD)). The fatliquoring of leathers Two complementary papers on the subject of fatliquors are presented in this issue of World Leather. The classification of fatliquors is discussed, but also the theory of this important component within leather manufacture. In addition, the practicalities of fatliquor applications are set down in detail. Dry flat and extended leathers To date the Back to Basic series has focused on the inter-actions between hides/skins and applied forces throughout wet processes and operations as these raw materials are converted into leather. The focus now shifts to the important drying stages as part of the formation of a dry, flat substrate of specific shape, dimension and properties. |
